APPLICATION
Chlorine dioxide is a powerful oxidant widely used across multiple industries. It plays a crucial role in drinking water
pre-treatment to reduce trihalomethanes, serves as an oxidizing agent in contaminated water for oil drilling, acts as a sanitizer in fruit and vegetable washing, functions as a biocide in cooling towers, and is extensively used in the bleaching of pulp for paper production. Chlorine dioxide is 2.5 times more powerful as an oxidizer than chlorine and is not subject to pH dependence, making it highly effective in various applications.
PROBLEM
Due to its instability and high reactivity, chlorine dioxide cannot be stored and must be generated on-site. Typical chlorine dioxide generators combine two or three chemicals in a controlled reaction to produce the compound and dissolve it into a water stream. The most common chemicals used in this process are sodium chlorite and hydrochloric acid, with some systems incorporating sodium hypochlorite to facilitate the required reactions.
Ensuring precise chemical dosing, monitoring system performance, and maintaining safety are critical challenges in chlorine dioxide generation. Improper dosing can lead to inefficient treatment, excessive chemical usage, or unsafe conditions. Without proper monitoring and control, system failures can result in production downtime, increased costs, and compliance issues.
SOLUTION
The Intuition-9 is the basis for building a comprehensive solution for chlorine dioxide generation and process monitoring. It consists of a controller, E-series chemical pumps for precise reagent dosing, flow meters, and Posiflow sensors to verify chemical flow and shut down the system if a pump loses prime. Additional safety and control features include a solenoid valve on the water supply, an optional WEL pH sensor for reaction monitoring, and a chlorine dioxide sensor to measure residual levels in the process water.
Advanced data logging and remote communication capabilities enhance system reliability, provide critical operational insights, and support compliance with safety and regulatory standards. The INT-9 controller offers a simple programming interface, allowing for seamless configuration across multiple systems.
In addition to generator control, the INT-9 can be integrated into existing systems solely for process monitoring, providing a cost-effective way to enhance oversight without replacing current infrastructure. Another valuable application is web-enabling existing chlorine dioxide generators with the INT-9 for remote monitoring and troubleshooting.
